In an alternate present where the Meiji Restoration never happened, Edo remains the seat of a society ruled by the shogunate and its enduring class system. With no Westernization, people enjoy Kabuki performances and spend time at pancake houses in a city that was never renamed Tokyo. The story follows Sobi, the sister of an Edo magistrate, as she attends school with Michisato, the eccentric son of the Tokugawa clan’s Mito family. He prefers to be called Michelle.
