In a future where people can live for thousands of years in mechanical bodies, those who remain human are treated as second-class citizens and may face poverty or persecution. After machine men kill his mother as part of a hunt, young Tetsuro Hoshino vows to avenge her and fulfill her wish that he obtain a mechanical body. Tetsuro meets Maetel, who offers him a free ticket aboard the space train Galaxy Express 999. The journey is said to lead to a free mechanical body, but rumors warn that passengers who board the train never return. As Tetsuro travels, he begins to learn about the world and pursues his goal of gaining a new body.
