High Score Girl

In 1991, sixth-grader Haruo Yaguchi finds his purpose in video games, even though he is unpopular and lacks confidence in nearly everything else. At a local arcade, he challenges his classmate Akira Oono, a popular, clever, beautiful, wealthy girl—and loses to her at Street Fighter II. Haruo cannot defeat Akira at any game, even after losing to her thirty times in a row. She keeps turning up at arcades after school, where she beats him again and again. Though the pair seem like an unlikely match, their repeated encounters begin to form an unusual friendship.
