In 2999, only eleven cities remain on an Earth transformed by climate change and a biochemical catastrophe that has made women extinct. For centuries, humanity has relied on the Holy Mother, the sole woman, whose ova are used to produce genetically engineered children. Society has since reorganized around all-male families, with gay relationships commonplace, and ordinary women have faded from public understanding. When the Holy Mother is assassinated by the terrorist Grinja, the government conceals her death, claiming she has shed her vessel and will be reborn. As officials secretly work to create an XXY male who can give birth, the story follows Kira, a boy born from a genetic experiment. Kira becomes caught in a three-way relationship with Grinja and Ashijin, a young man who calls himself Kira’s owner, while seeking freedom.
