This collection brings together four stories drawn from Chinese folklore. Three of them—“A Mercy Destiny,” “The Madman of the Flowers,” and “The Origin of Love”—feature characters also seen in *Hana no Koe*: Dai-Chun, Song Gui-Xiang, and Ru-Chun, living in the Tang Dynasty. Dai-Chun and Song try to help their friends overcome vanity, pride, egoism, and envy. Song’s naivete, however, complicates their efforts.
