Wim Abel, a powerful court magician of the Cyrus Empire, is imprisoned after the empire’s upper classes falsely accuse him of treason. Fearing his immense strength, they confine him in a dungeon protected by a barrier meant to make escape impossible. Wim nevertheless breaks free, carrying power said to be enough to terrify an entire nation. He sets his sights on the Kingdom of Leoria, which some describe as a perfect meritocracy, while the fate of the Cyrus Empire that cast him out remains in question.
