Wangan Midnight

On Tokyo’s Shuto Expressway, known as the Wangan, high-speed street racing brings danger from heavy traffic, crashes, and engines pushed to their limits. High school student Akio Asakura is beaten in a race by doctor Tatsuya Shima and his black Porsche 964 Turbo, the “BlackBird.” Determined to get faster, Akio visits a junkyard for car parts and discovers an immaculate midnight-blue Fairlady Z. He buys it and learns that its tuned, twin-turbo L28 engine produces 620 horsepower—and that its previous owners have suffered terrible accidents, beginning with the first owner’s death. The story follows Akio’s encounters on the Wangan, with his ongoing rivalry against the BlackBird at its center.
