Ichiyo and Akehiko are two 15-year-old boys raised in the friendly surroundings of a prosperous Japanese restaurant. Their lives are safe and happy, but they train diligently at the local dojo, as young people do in feudal Japan, hoping to grow strong. In nineteenth-century Japan, turbulent times bring violence to the streets. As they face this dangerous world, Ichiyo and Akehiko must learn what it means to wield a sword, take a life, and live with the uncertainty of the sword-bearing life.
