In the Edo period, the state of Unabara seeks the strongest martial artist to decide its next ruler. Known as the “Haunt of Demons,” Unabara draws fighters who live by strength and battle alone. Its ruler, Washitzu Naosata, summons his 31 sons and orders each to find a martial artist to represent him. Their champions will fight until one remains, and the son whose fighter proves strongest will inherit the state. One son, Washitzu Naoshi, travels to the remote Daigame Ryuu dojo to seek the legendary swordsman Kurogane Jinsuke, said to be capable of defeating a thousand martial artists. Jinsuke has been missing for years, but Naoshi sees the fighting skill of his son, Gama, and asks him to come instead. Eager to grow stronger, Gama accepts and enters the contest.
