The Iron Maiden is a torture device shaped like the Virgin Mary, its interior lined with long nails that pierce anyone trapped inside. The device known today, however, is only a counterfeit based on old tales. The story raises the question of whether the Iron Maiden truly existed in the past. At its heart is a maiden with a gentle, loving face and a violent body, whose appearance recalls the fearsome device.
