Prince Shōtoku, the legendary regent of Japan and a supporter of Buddhism’s spread, falls in love with a man and suffers over his unrequited feelings. His love shapes this story of complicated relationships and political and religious history. Rather than a conventional boys’ love story, the manga uses its homoerotic theme as a central force in a complex plot told in intricate language. The work is by Yamagishi Ryōko and won the 1983 Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo.
