A mysterious black structure destroyed a city ten years ago, leaving childhood friends Kagerou and Momiji to grow up beneath it. Now teenagers, they share a close bond and an unspoken attraction, but Kagerou holds back from confessing because he believes he is too weak to protect her. When the structure sends down strange spheres that devour people and turn them into monsters, Kagerou and Momiji are caught up in the disaster. The encounter changes their lives: an organization identifies Kagerou as an “ember” and classifies the non-human Momiji as “dross,” fit only for experiments. Unwilling to accept her fate, Kagerou resolves to protect the girl he loves by whatever means he can.
