Gu Qingning, an orphan of the Gu family, grows up in the household of the Marquis of Guangping and becomes engaged to Lu Hangzhi, younger brother of the Duke’s heir. Her cousin Shen Ruoying is engaged to the heir, Lu Jingyu, around the same time. After Lu Jingyu is reported killed in battle, Shen Ruoying, fearing the reputation of a husband-killer, seduces Lu Hangzhi. He then demands that Gu Qingning accept the role of his concubine. Refusing to give up her dignity, she chooses instead to marry the deceased Lu Jingyu and claim her rightful place as the Young Duke’s wife, in name and honor.
