In a future Japan 500 years after the perpetual war known as Eternity ends through a marvel, people live in what is called “the time after forever.” Christianity has spread, and the Vatican governs ordinary life, dividing people into the deeply devoted and those who are less committed. Ogito is regarded as a pagan, but his extensive reading of forbidden books helps him become an assistant in the Bureau of Saints’ Marvel Reviews section. He is sent on an assessment with a three-person team, whose leader, a priest, is killed. Ogito is left with Izumi, an unusual man who gave his life to God so that his heart could live inside a puppet.
