Kaiji

In 1995, unemployed high school graduate Kaiji Ito struggles to survive in Tokyo during Japan’s recession. With no steady work, he spends his days in his apartment, turning to cheap pranks, gambling, liquor and cigarettes while obsessing over money and his constant poverty. Two years later, a debt collector named Endo arrives to collect a loan owed in Kaiji’s name. Kaiji can spend ten years repaying it, or board the gambling ship Espoir for one night and try to clear the debt. Pressured by Endo’s con, Kaiji accepts the gamble, though Endo expects him never to return.
