Familiars can grant a chosen girl one wish, but she must then become a magical girl and fight witches—evil beings born from curses and responsible for murders and suicides. Schoolgirls Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki are approached by Kyubey, a familiar, and Mami Tomoe, a magical girl, with offers to make the contract. Another magical girl, the mysterious Homura Akemi, tries to stop Madoka from agreeing. The girls face a choice that ties a wish to a fight against the witches.
