Since the Heian era, the Mutsu family has passed down Mutsu Enmei Ryuu, an unarmed martial art. Its practitioners follow a path said to be undefeated and are known as the Shura no Mono, or Men of Carnage. This story follows generations of the Mutsu family through different periods of Japanese history. Its arcs feature Yakumo, Izumi and his younger brother Azuma, Takato, Kiichi, Tatsumi alongside Komahiko and Torahiko, Tenpei, and Sakon Mutsu.
