Amarion, a knight from a harsh northern kingdom, accepts a marriage proposal from Grand Duke Mort, known as “the Walking Death,” hoping his enormous dowry will help her struggling homeland. On their wedding night, Mort gives her a strange duty: she must stay awake beside him while he sleeps, and may kill him if the task becomes unbearable, without fear of blame. As Mort sleeps, Amarion understands why he chose a knight for a wife. Night after night, she keeps watch, and his manner toward her grows increasingly tender. At last, he smiles warmly and asks whether he may call her by her name.
