Twenty years ago, fourteen heroes set out to stop the Wischtech threat, but their mission divides them. Three die, four abandon the journey and are branded the Lances of Betrayal, while the remaining seven defeat Wischtech and return as celebrated figures who help rebuild the empire. Their victory ushers in a prestigious era, and the Lances are believed to be gone. Now the Lances have returned, raising an army on the frontier and bringing fear to the empire as they plunder towns and ravage the land. Koinzell, a young man who wields the Black Blade, may be the only one able to destroy them alone. His origins and purpose remain uncertain, as does any connection he may have to the Seven Heroes.
